Powell County (Kentucky)

Powell County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Stanton, named after Richard H. Stanton, a member of the U.S. Congress. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the central northeastern Kentucky and has an area of 467 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County, Menifee County, Wolfe County, Lee County, Estill County and Clark County.

History

Powell County was formed on January 7, 1852 from parts of Clark County, Estill County and Montgomery County. It was named after Lazarus W. Powell, a Governor and U.S. Senator.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,237 people in Powell County. Of these, 115 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,044 households and 3,783 families.
