Powell County (Kentucky)
Powell County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Stanton, named after Richard H. Stanton, a member of the U.S. Congress. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in the central northeastern Kentucky and has an area of 467 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County, Menifee County, Wolfe County, Lee County, Estill County and Clark County.
History
Powell County was formed on January 7, 1852 from parts of Clark County, Estill County and Montgomery County. It was named after Lazarus W. Powell, a Governor and U.S. Senator.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,237 people in Powell County. Of these, 115 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,044 households and 3,783 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.56 percent White, 0.62 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, and 0.07 percent from other races; 0.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.66 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,044 households out of which 36.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 12.4 percent were single mothers, 25.0 percent were non-families, 21.8 percent of all households and 8.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.02.
Based on the county the population was spread from 26.6 percent population under 18 years, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.
The median income for a household was $ 25,515, and the median income for a family was $ 30,483. Males had a median income of $ 26,962, women $ 18,810. The per capita income was $ 13,060. 18.9 percent of families and 23.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 31.0 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 20.0 percent of those 65 years.
