The Powell River is a river in southwest Virginia and eastern Tennessee.

It has its origins in rural Wise County near the town of Laurel Grove north-west of Norton. From there it flows several kilometers before at Kent Junction of the Roaring Fork flows into him.

From Kent Junction there are 301 kilometers of river to its confluence with the on Norris Lake pent Clinch River. The catchment area covers 2429 km ².

Clinch River and Powell River are the only rivers in the upper Tennessee River system, which still have free-flowing headwaters.

The Lincoln Memorial University operates the Powell River Aquatic Research Station. This is located at the Tennessee State Route 63 at the junction on the Powell River. The research center was opened in April 2008 and dedicated to the study of water quality, flora, fauna and related topics.
