Poxviridae

The Poxviridae ( smallpox virus ) are a family of viruses that is the group of Nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses attributed. This family includes the subfamilies Chordopoxvirinae and Entemopoxvirinae.

Features

Representatives of this family of viruses are among the largest known viruses. You can reach a size of 200 to 400 nm to oval shape with its rectangular and are therefore also be seen in a very good light microscope. In all members of this family are enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses (dsDNA ) because they possess not only the capsid yet another case with an outer and inner part. This capsid contains, along with associated proteins to the DNA double strand in an S-shaped folding. The structure of these viruses is relatively complex, as they include a bi-concave core plus two lateral bodies. All belong to the family of poxviridae virus include virus-encoded enzymes required for synthesis of mRNA in the host cell. Furthermore, they have a linear double stranded DNA molecule ( DNA viruses ) of a size of about 130,000 to 375,000 base pairs. In the cytoplasm of their respective host they can easily multiply as well, as they offer many control proteins or produce themselves.

Triggered diseases

The viruses of the subfamily Chordopoxvirinae usually infect mammals and birds that Entemopoxvirinae but insects and cause a variety of diseases.

Importance in science

In the history of science they possess by smallpox epidemics and the attempts to produce vaccines a long past.
