Poznań Society of Friends of Learning

Poznańskie Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk or Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences, PTPN short, is a nonprofit organization, which was established on 13 February 1857 by 42 founding members in Posen into life.

History

The aim of the society was to protect and promote Polish culture and science. First president of the company was August Cieszkowski. The originally planned humanistic and artistic profile of the company has quickly expanded on the natural sciences. We researched and made contacts, exchanged ideas with other scientific institutions, inter alia, from Warsaw, Krakow, Lvov, Petersburg, Berlin, Prague, Olomouc, Belgrade, Kharkov and Copenhagen, and published their own journals.

Up to 1872 took place in Krakow founding of the PAU, the Academy of scholarship that PTPN was the main cultural and scientific organization of all parts of Poland and then the Prussian part. In addition to scientific activities, the Company collected Polish works of art, securing it for posterity. In 1919, the PTPN was one of the initiators of the founding Poznań Piastenuniversität.

Presence

Today the company has about a thousand members from all over the country, but especially scientists Poznań universities and institutions that regularly and frequently meet in commissions and symposia.
