Pozzuolo del Friuli

Pozzuolo del Friuli ( Friulian Puçui, German outdated Pozul ) is an Italian commune in the province of Udine ( Friuli- Venezia Giulia ) with 6918 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Set in the Friuli lowlands municipality covers 34.28 km ². The municipality also includes the villages of Cargnacco ( 800 inhabitants), Carpeneto Sammardenchia, Terenzano and Zugliano. The place Pozzuolo del Friuli is 67 m above sea level and 9 km southwest of Udine. It is drained by the Torrente Cormor.

History

World War I

After the end of October 1917, the 2nd Italian army had been defeated at the Battle of Caporetto and broke German and Austria -Hungarian troops from the upper Isonzo from the Friuli, the fighting at the lower Isonzo 3 Italian army was forced to withdraw towards the Piave to a encirclement and destruction to escape. To permit an orderly retreat of that army, protected them, among other things, the II Italian Cavalry Brigade with the regiments Genova Cavalleria and Lancieri di Novara against the little north advancing Associations of the Central Powers. On 29 and 30 October 1917, arrived at Pozzuolo del Friuli to a bloody battle, in which the Second Cavalry Brigade together with the infantry brigade Bergamo tried to temporarily stop the German - Austrian advance. Thanks to this sacrifice, the third Italian army could safely retreat to the Piave, whose lower course she defended in the following Piaveschlachten.

In the center of Pozzuolo del Friuli is now home to an equestrian monument in which every October 30 (today day of the Italian cavalry) held a memorial service. An Italian Panzer Division was named in the 1950s after Pozzuolo del Friuli, now bears the place names, among others, a brigade of the Italian Army.
