Prairial

The Glorious First ( German also Wies month) is the ninth month of the Republican Calendar of the French Revolution. He follows the Floreal, it follows the Messidor.

The name is derived from French prairie (grassland). The Glorious First is the third month of the spring quarter ( mois de printemps ). It starts around the 20th of May and ends around June 18.

Day names

Like all months of the French Revolution Glorious First of the calendar had 30 days, which were divided into 3 decades. The days were named after agricultural plants, except for the 5th and 10th day of each decade. The 5th day ( Quintidi ) was named after a pet, the 10th day ( Decadi ) to an agricultural implement.

It is striking that Fabre d' Églantine - wanted to establish itself as days name the male and the female animal (in this case the duck), and thus did not get through - as well as elsewhere. The female word " cane" was discarded. Unlike the Germans, the male word " canard " in French is also the neutral species name.
