Predeal is a small town in the district of Brasov in Transylvania and the highest town in Romania. The health resort with 6,735 inhabitants (as of 2003) is surrounded by five mountain massifs Postavarul, Piatra Mare, Bucegi, Baiu and Fetifoi that are part of the Carpathian Mountains.

Predeal is located directly on the pass in 1093 meters. The Predeal Pass is the main link between Wallachia and Transylvania and thus also between Budapest ( capital of Hungary ) and Bucharest ( capital of Romania ). About him lead a national road ( European route 60) and the railway line Ploieşti - Braşov, a double-track electrified railway line. Just north of the city was once the border between Austria -Hungary and Romania.

Several chairlifts open up a mountain with several ski runs.

In the area, there was heavy fighting during the First World War.

Personalities

  • Wilhelm Friedrich Heinrich Prinz zu Wied (1876-1945), the Albanian prince from a German noble family, for the last 20 years of his life lived in the city.
