Prefectures in France

In France they called the prefecture ( préfecture French ) an administrative headquarters. In the strict sense is understood to mean a prefecture also the seat of the prefect, the town in which it is located, the associated administrative units or the actual building.

In the French unitary state the prefecture under the Ministry of Interior in Paris.

The management unit of the prefecture is a device that was created at the time of the Consulate under Napoleon Bonaparte and still exists today.

The seat of the prefecture is the main town (French chef-lieu ) of a department. The chief administrative officer of a department is the prefect (French préfet ). The classification unit underlying the district, which is chaired by a sub-prefecture, when in the municipality (French commune) is not already the prefecture itself. The prefecture capital of a region is also the Prefecture of the region.

Today in France there are 100 prefectures. An exception is the greater Paris area, where the police prefecture of the department of Paris (atomic number 75), Hauts -de -Seine (92 ), Seine- Saint- Denis (93) and Val -de- Marne (94) is summarized. The latter three departments still have but its main town, which is also referred to as the Prefecture:

  • 92 ( Hauts -de- Seine): Nanterre
  • 93 (Seine- Saint- Denis ): Bobigny
  • 94 (Val -de- Marne): Créteil

Obviously, this is also supported by the station name of the Métro and RER: Nanterre Préfecture - (RER A), Créteil- Préfecture (M8 ).
