The pregnane X receptor ( Abbr: PXR, NR1I2, English pregnane X receptor ) is a nuclear receptor whose main function is to detect toxic foreign substances and to activate the expression of proteins that are responsible for detoxification and clearance.

The receptor is activated by endogenous and exogenous substances, such as steroids, antibiotics, bile acids and environmental contaminants, such as non- dioxin-like PCBs. Through its DNA-binding domain to bind to hormones responsive element such as that of the CYP3A4 promoter.
