Preiner Gscheid Pass

The Preiner Gscheid (1070 m above sea level. A. ) is a mountain pass parallel to the Semmering Pass. It crosses south of the Rax the wooded ridge, the ( 1565 m) occupies the south over the Trat Kogel to southeast, Semmering Pass. The Preiner Gscheid crosses this limit also the provinces of Lower Austria and Styria.

The pass road connects the villages of Reichenau an der Rax and the resort Prein (municipality of Reichenau ) at the foot of the pass with chapels on the Styrian side and has a maximum slope of 11%.

At the summit there is a car park and Edelweißhütte. The Preiner Gscheid is node and starting point of many hiking trails. Here the Raxetappe the European long-distance hiking trail E4 begins. On the Rax following cottages are within easy reach:

  • Waxriegelhaus, Walking time: approximately 50 minutes
  • Seehütte over the Göbl Kühn climbing, walking time: about 2 hours
  • Karl- Ludwig-Haus on the serpentine path, walking time: about 2 hours

The disc hut on the Great washer ( 1,473 m above sea level. A. ) is about five kilometers southwest of the pass.

In winter, the Preiner Gscheid is the starting point for the well-worn ski tour through the Karlsgraben on the Rax plateau.
