The Prenton Park is a football stadium in Birkenhead in the north west of England and the home ground of Tranmere Rovers.

History

The Prenton Park was built about 1887 and 1912 obtained from the Tranmere Rovers. Previously, it was, inter alia, Cammell Laird FC as a stadium. In addition to the Rovers, the reserve team of FC Liverpool wearing their home games here.

Between 1994 and 1995, the stadium was completely renovated and equipped exclusively with seats.

Games

The Prenton Park was only one time the venue for an international competition. On July 22, 1998, there came to the UEFA Cup first leg between Shelbourne and Rangers as the club feared riots of rival groups of fans because of the denominational background of the two teams. The game was considered a home game for Shelbourne and ended with 3:5 for the Rangers. Since there were problems with the supporters of Rangers during the game, they had to due to an application by the UEFA penalty of 25,000 SFr. (approx. € 16,500 ) pay.

The record number of audience was achieved with 24,424 on 5 February 1972 in an FA Cup match against the Tranmere Rovers Stoke City.

The worst stadium utilization, however, was in 1984 in a game against Halifax Town, which looked at merely 937 people.

Grandstands

The stadium has a capacity of 16,567 seats. These are divided into

  • The Kop Stand, with 5,696
  • The Johnny King Stand ( formerly " Borough Road Stand " ), with 2,414
  • The Cowshed Stand ( for fans of the away team ), with 2,500
  • And the Main Stand ( Grandstand ), with 3,598 seats

In addition, the Town Paddock and Bebington Paddock, with 1,209 and 1,222 seats.
