Prepatellar bursa

The Bursa subcutanea pr ( a) epatellaris ( often shortened in clinical use as prepatellar bursa ) is a bursa in the knee joint. It is located between the front surface of the patella and the skin and thus belongs to the skin bursae. It provides padding and displaceability of the patella with respect to the skin.

The superficial position favors injury and inflammation of the bursa subcutanea prepatellaris ( prepatellar bursitis ). These can be acute or chronic in nature and show in an increased, fluctuating filling of the bursa. Inflammation are mainly the result of overloading due to kneeling activities ( " housemaids knee ") and a typical occupational disease for tilers.
