The Presidential Medal of Freedom ( German Presidential Medal of Freedom ) in addition to the peer Golden Congressional Medal of Honor one of the two highest civilian awards in the United States of America.

History

Today's Presidential Medal of Freedom was established on 22 February 1963, when President John F. Kennedy newly founded under this name. Your direct predecessor was the Medal of Freedom was, which was set up in 1945 by Harry S. Truman to honor deserving individuals of the public service during the Second World War.

The award may be presented several times both to a person as well as posthumously.

Shaping

A five-pointed gold star white, enameled, on a red pentagon (as bearer pillow ). In the center a blue disk with the 13 golden stars of the U.S. coat of arms. The star is taken by a ring of five golden eagles crest.

The Order is worn around the neck with a deep blue band with two fine white edge stripes. The loop is summarized by a silver eagle crest on the tape.

Award levels

The award is presented as a Presidential Medal of Freedom Medal neck as well as in two more significant religious stages, namely as a Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction and Presidential Medal of Freedom, with Military Distinction. They differ essentially by a golden eagle and stars on the tape.
