Presidential Palace, Vilnius

The Presidential Palace (also Präsidentur, Lithuanian Lietuvos Respublikos prezidentūra ) is in Vilnius, Lithuania, on the Simona - Daukantas Square in front of the University of Vilnius.

History

The first building was built on the site in the 15th century. Since the 16th century, Vilnius bishop's residence was located in the building. After the death of the Chancellor of Lithuania, and voivode of Vilnius Alberta Goštautas was moved in 1543 the bishop's residence in the palace of the former chancellor. The residence remained there until in 1794.

Later Vilnius Governor General resided in the building. The palace was visited by many people such as Tsar Alexander I and Napoleon Bonaparte. In the period 1824-1832, the building was based on a design Russian architect Vasily Petrovich Stasov reconstructed in Empire style. Since 1993 the President of Lithuania resides in the palace. In 1997 the building was restored.
