Presley Ewing

Presley Underwood Ewing ( born September 1, 1822 in Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky; † September 27, 1854 in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky ) was an American politician. Between 1851 and 1854 he represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Presley Ewing attended the public schools of his home and thereafter until 1840, the Centre College in Danville. After a subsequent law degree from Transylvania University in Lexington, and his admission to the bar he began in Russellville to work in this profession. Ewing studied in the years 1845 and 1846 also still at Baptist Seminary in Newton (Massachusetts ) theology.

Politically, Ewing was a member of the Whig party. In the years 1848 and 1849 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Kentucky. In the congressional elections of 1850 he was in the third electoral district of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Finis McLean on March 4, 1851. After a re-election, he could remain until his death on September 27, 1854 in Congress. This period was overshadowed by the heated debate over slavery prior to the Civil War. Ewing died in September 1854 of cholera. He was buried in Russellville. His parliamentary seat fell after a special election to Francis Bristow.
