Presley Spruance

Presley Spruance ( born September 11, 1785 in Kent County, Delaware, † February 13, 1863 in Smyrna, Delaware ) was an American politician ( Whig Party ), who represented the state of Delaware in the U.S. Senate.

Presley Spruance worked professionally as a businessman and as a holder of a production plant in Smyrna. He took his first political office in 1823 as a delegate in the House of Representatives from Delaware; later he was one of the Houses of Parliament 1839-1840 at another time. From 1826 and 1831 he was a member of the State Senate. Other terms of office followed there from 1835 to 1836, 1837 to 1838, 1841 to 1842, from 1843 to 1844 and finally in 1847, where he served as Speaker several times. In 1831 he was also a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of Delaware.

On March 4, 1847 Spruance moved as successor to Thomas Clayton in the U.S. Senate in Washington, where he represented the interests of the Whigs to March 3, 1853. After one term, he did not stand for re-election, stepped back out of the Congress and devoted himself to his business affairs.
