Press cake

Press cake or oil cake is produced in the production of vegetable oil on the principle of cold pressing coproduct. Components of the press cake are remaining after the pressing of oil seeds and oleaginous fruit solids and not squeezed oil content. In the production of olive oil and the presscake is also called marc. In contrast to the press cake produced in the hot pressing or extraction coproduct extraction meal is called.

Press cake is a mineral-rich product with high protein content. In contrast to extraction meal press cake also has a high fat content.

Press cake can be used as feed in livestock feed, with the exception of products from pressing inedible raw materials (eg jatropha ). In addition, the press cake can be used as organic fertilizer, fuel and substrate for biogas production. Also, a technical use, eg for protein extraction or for the production of packaging or natural insulation materials, is possible.

Comes press cake as animal feed used, so may be substituted due to the high protein content of feed imports, eg from soybean meal. This promotes regional business cycles, since the cold pressing of oil seeds and fruits takes place in so-called decentralized oil mills, most of which are located in an agricultural setting. Rapeseed in Germany is the most important raw material for the production of oil / grease products. Rapeseed cake is an increasingly used protein and fat -rich feed for cattle and pigs.
