Although Stewart cooperation described in retrospect positive, but he stated that the recordings " in no particularly exciting direction led [n ] " and McCartney artistic " just a bit tired " was. Eric Stewart withdrew prematurely from the recordings back: In addition to his personal differences with producer Hugh Padgham also Paul McCartney's mood swings in the studio led to increasingly bad mood. Criticism

The Rolling Stone was in 1986 that Press to Play McCartney let the music firmly arrive in the present. The collaboration with Stewart and producer Padgham connect McCartney's melodies with a " dense electronic, contemporary sound ," which give the album a " rhythmic kick."

Allmusic stated that McCartney try on the album in the areas that he can be good, and austeste what was working. Press to Play is not his strongest album, but more interesting than some of its content and style consistent albums. The Chicago Tribune called Press to play one of the better solo albums McCartney, it was something edgier and much faster than you would be used to from him, even if it was not particularly memorable.
