Prestea

Since 1873, the reduction of gold deposits is operated in Prestea until 1965 by various independent companies which were united at this time by the government. The World Bank granted a loan in 1985 to clean up, but after three years of continuous losses, the mines were privatized in 1994. Since 1999, the mineral rights are mostly the Company Golden Stars Resources. Through the mining caused environmental problems such as the storage of overburden in the vicinity of the hospital or the contamination of the river by toxic waste, as happened in October 2004. Due to the problems caused by the detonation shock damage was caused to the buildings of the city.

The gold mines are a tourist attraction partly because of the smelter, in which the gold is melted down into ingots and two tennis courts and an 18- hole golf course.

The higher education serves the Prestea Senior High Technical School. There is also the Prestea Goldfields International School.

In the years 2002 and 2003, the local football club Prestea Mines Stars played in the highest league Ghana Ghanaian Premier League. The stadium was renovated with the financial support of Bogoso Gold Limited.

A partnership combines Prestea and the Protestant churches Cheap -Ingenheim.
