Preveza (Greek Πρέβεζα ( f sg ); Albanian Prevezë / a ) is a port city and a municipality on the western coast of Greece, at the output of Ambracian golf in the region of Epirus.

Geography

The city of Preveza - now a city district - has about 20,795 inhabitants ( 2011) and is the seat of an Orthodox bishop. It is picturesquely situated on the northern side of the strait to Ambracian Golf ( maximum distance 600 m ) on a peninsula on the Ionian Sea to the west and Ambracian Gulf in the east. The municipality extends about 30 kilometers north-east along the coast and around 50 kilometers to the north into the mountainous interior inside.

History

In the strait between the Gulf of Preveza and the opposing actions the battle of Actium between the future emperor Octavian and his rival Mark Antony took place in the year 31 BC. After their defeat Antony and Cleopatra fled to Alexandria. After the suicide of Antony and Cleopatra and Antony Kapitalution of troops Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire. Six kilometers north of Preveza was located the ancient city of Nicopolis, who founded the later Emperor Augustus to commemorate his victory (Gr. Nike ).

1538 Battle of Preveza took place in an Ottoman fleet under Khair ad-Din Barbarossa and Turgut Reis won a Christian fleet under Andrea Doria.

The church today Preveza in 2010 formed by incorporation of Louros and Zalongo into the existing since 1919, steadily extended community.

Economy and Transport

Preveza exported, among other things olives, dairy products and vegetables.

Preveza is served by several national roads to the Greek road network. The National Highway 18 runs north to Igoumenitsa, in a southerly direction through the Preveza - share- tunnel to Vonitsa - Anaktorio in the south of Ambracian Gulf and the island of Lefkas. The National Highway 21 leads in a northeasterly direction towards Filippiada and continue to Ioannina (north) or Arta (southeast).

On the south of Preveza peninsula of Actium is the airport of Aktion, which can be reached through the road tunnel of Preveza - actions. The port of Preveza is located on the western coast of the Gulf Ambracian. Rail connections exist.
