History
Abraham Powell and Caleb Baldwin Rhoades, both trappers from Salem, reached this area in 1877 and built a log cabin. This first hut was the starting point for today's Price. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of coal in the 1880s. A very big change also brought the railroad, which was built here with a connection to the coal mines in 1883. Before that Price was a small, isolated farming community and has now been an active commercial center. Butch Cassidy and his gang often came into town to stock up on supplies. 1897 Cassidy stole the payroll of the Pleasant Valley Coal Company. Price was named after the Price River ( discoverer William Price (1869 ) ).
