Priekule, Latvia

Priekule ( German: Preekuln ) is a city in southwestern Latvia. Since 2009, there is an administrative community with five surrounding communities.

The town was first mentioned in 1483, as Baron Korff acquired land here. 1871 Priekule grew as a port of the Baltic Sea was built in Libau on the Warsaw - Petersburg railroad. The city rights were granted in 1928. During World War II, the city was completely destroyed in 1945 in the Kurlandschlachten.

  • The so-called Swedish gates of the estate Preekuln are under monument protection.
  • 1680 was made by the local blacksmith Johanson a test flight from the church tower.
