Priests of the Sacred Heart

The Dehonians (Community of Sacred Heart priest, latin Congregation sacerdotum a sacro cords of Jesus, religious symbol SCJ or SCI ) are a religious order in the Roman Catholic Church.

The French priest Léon Gustave Dehon (1843-1925) founded the community in 1878.

Dissemination

Worldwide, approximately 2,200 confreres to this community. Particularly strong Sacred Heart priests are represented today in Brazil. About 50 Sacred Heart priests living and working in the German branches: Bonn -Oberkassel ( Provincial ), Freiburg im Breisgau ( training and study house, hospital chaplaincy, and others), Handrup / Emsland (Gymnasium Leoninum, parish ministry ), Maria Martental ( pilgrimage church and parish ministry in Leienkaul, community association Kaisersesch ), Oberhausen, Berlin, and at Neustadt on the Wine Route ( Sacred Heart convent Neustadt on the Wine Route, educational and retreat center, parish ministry ). Some brothers also work on individual sites.

The Sacred Heart priests belong to the so-called apostolic congregations, whose members are often in the parish pastoral ( parish ), in the pastoral care of certain groups of people, such as the sick, the elderly, young people, etc., as well as in education (school, religious education, religious adult education) are active. Also, these communities are a charitable to those in need at home and abroad.

Organization

It is typical of apostolic communities that members are not bound permanently to a particular monastery, but can be added as needed. The brothers put after the novitiate from the profession of poverty, chastity and obedience. With these vows, they are first time on and after perpetual profession forever the Institute. The Dehonianern included in 2007 in addition to about 1590 priests ( Fathers ) and 2 cardinals, 20 bishops, 26 deacons and 160 lay brothers. All have in the Order - at least theoretically - the same rights and obligations. The approximately 400 young confreres are in training ( novices, brothers and students) -. In a phased manner - to the Community The members share no religious habit ( Habit ) and are not obliged to common choral prayer. At the head of the community of the Superior General is subordinate to the Pope in Rome. The Superior General, currently the Portuguese Father José Ornelas Carvalho, is elected by the chapter, the Assembly delegated brethren from all parts of the world, on time. Also the head of each province, the Provincial and the Rectors of the houses are elected on time. In Germany is currently Heiner Wilmer Father Provincial, to August 1, 2007, this office by Father August Hülsmann was exercised. Elected councils assist the officers in their work. In some countries the houses instead of a province called regions and districts are assigned.

Spiritual orientation

The spirituality of Dehonians is strongly related to Jesus Christ. His love for people is worshiped under the sign of the cross on the opened heart. Jesus' love was especially the poor and disadvantaged. Therefore, the Dehonians church and society want fairer by they want to help reconcile the people with one another and with God. So they combine mysticism and politics together. The daily life and prayer in community, but also the diverse involvement in church and world are they equally important.
