Primorsko-Akhtarsk

Primorsko- Akhtarsk (Russian Приморско - Ахтарск ) is a city in Krasnodar (Russia) region with 32,257 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 150 km north- west of the regional capital Krasnodar on the coast of the Azov Sea. South of town the Achtarski Liman and more, today partially drained lagoons extend. These and the Beissugski Liman ten kilometers north of the city are the largest bays of this kind on the east coast of the Azov Sea.

Primorsko- Akhtarsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The town is the terminus of a railway line opened in 1914 ( station Achtari ) of Krasnodar on Timaschowsk.

History

In the course of the Russo- Ottoman War 1768-1774 ( Russian name, mutilated by Turkish about white rock by the sea ) was purchased from the Russian troops located here Ottoman fortress Achtar - Bachtar taken, which one after the temporary loss of Azov 1696 instead older settlement had been built. Of the Russian army which Achtari -Redoute ( Achtarski redut ) was built in 1778.

After the loss of the military importance of the fortifications in 1829, the Cossack village ( Chutor ) Achtarski arose. 1900 the village received the status of a Cossack village by the name of Primorsko- Achtarskaja ( Primorsky Russian for the sea ).

1949, the city charter was granted under the present name.

Economy

Primorsko- Akhtarsk is marked as the center of an agricultural area of the food industry. In addition, fishing, fish processing, a perfume factory and building materials industry.

The city is the seaside resort with eight mile stretch of sand and shingle beach.
