Prince Aloys of Liechtenstein

Alois Maria Adolf, also Aloys Gonzaga Maria Adolf, ( born June 17, 1869 Castle in Germany Hollenegg, Styria, Austria, † March 16, 1955 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein ) was a prince of Liechtenstein.

Life

Alois was born as the third child of Alfred of Liechtenstein and Henriette of Liechtenstein Castle Hollenegg.

He was an active captain in the 12th Lancers, most recently as a lieutenant colonel. Alois married Archduchess Elisabeth Amalie of Austria, daughter of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria and Maria Theresa of Portugal, on 20 April 1903 in Vienna. Emperor Franz Joseph I made personally clear at the engagement on November 8, 1902 in Laxenburg, that his niece Elisabeth Amalie could marry any of his subjects, and consequently no Austrian citizen. He was therefore the object of the Austrian citizenship by the Prince as a condition of marriage.

The family property in Bohemia and Moravia was greatly reduced by a land reform. The high inheritance taxes in Czechoslovakia were the motive, the successor to skip a generation. After the childless brothers John II and Franz, who reigned 1929 to 1938 as Prince Franz I, the sons of Prince Alfred ( 1842-1907 ) were entitled to inherit. However, on February 26, 1923 renounced both entitled to inherit next, but unmarried and childless Prince Franz ( 1868-1929 ) and his younger brother Prince Alois on the princely Majoratsanwartschaft and succeed to the throne in the Principality of Liechtenstein. The succession was thus on Alois ' oldest son, Franz Josef (1906-1989), the godson of the emperor, over. The waiver was made known by means of hand writing of Prince Johann II on 15 March 1923. Franz Joseph II took during the war years 1944 his parents from their home on the Great Moravian castle Ullersdorf on the Vaduz Castle.

Alois of Liechtenstein was considered a patron of science and the arts. He was an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts. Alois was Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece; his wife Elisabeth Amalie was Star Order of the Cross lady. Alois was a member of K.Ö.St.V. Austria Wien in the ACA.
