Prince Eugene of Saxe-Hildburghausen

Friedrich Wilhelm Eugen von Sachsen -Hildburghausen ( born October 8, 1730 in Hildburghausen, † December 4, 1795 in Öhringen ) was a prince of Saxe- Hildburghausen.

Life

Eugen was the younger son of Duke Ernst Friedrich II of Saxe -Hildburghausen and his wife Countess Caroline of Erbach- Fuerstenau ( 1700-1758 ). His godfather was, among other princes, Prince Eugene of Savoy. At the wedding of his brother Ernst Friedrich III. Carl with the only daughter of the Danish royal couple, Eugene the Ordre de l'union parfaite was awarded.

He was young in Dutch services and became lieutenant colonel and captain of the guard. He resigned from the service in 1753 and went into Danish services. In Danish royal service he was colonel of infantry and commander of the artillery corps. In 1759, he received the Polish White Eagle. He was Major-General and Chief of the Oldenburg Regiment of Foot. He resigned from the service as a lieutenant general of infantry. In Hildburghausen he was commander of the Grenadier Corps.

Prinz Eugen founded in 1760 the porcelain factory in the monastery Veilsdorf. From Eugene's brother equipped with ample privileges, the economic success of the factory, however, remained low.

As the owner of the manor Weitersroda he founded there a new parish built a new church and a royal villa. In Hildburghausen he was tenant of the coin and builder of the so-called sovereign house, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Eugene was as skilled mechanic and artificer.

1769 he was appointed along with his great-uncle Joseph and Duchess of Saxe- Meiningen by Emperor Joseph II to debit Commissioner for completely indebted Principality of Saxe-Hildburghausen. He embezzled assets, which led to the dispute with Prince Joseph. He then moved in 1770 to his brother-in to Öhringen.

The prince married on March 13, 1778 his niece, the Princess Caroline ( 1761-1790 ), daughter of Duke Ernst Friedrich III. Carl von Sachsen- Hildburghausen. The marriage remained childless and Prince Eugene died five years after his wife at his sister Amalie at Castle Öhringen.
