Prince Frederick William of Solms-Braunfels

Frederick William, Prince of Solms- Braunfels ( born October 22, 1770 in Braunfels, † April 13, 1814 in Slawentzitz ) was a Prussian major general.

Life

Frederick William was the son of Prince Wilhelm Ernst Ferdinand of Solms- Braunfels (1721-1783) and Countess Sophie Christine Wilhelmine of Solms- Laubach ( 1741-1772 ).

He attended the War School in 1784 in Colmar, then studied from 1786 to 1788 at the University of Strasbourg and then appeared as a cornet in höllandische services in the Guards on foot. As a captain and squadron leader in the Orange Rifles regiment he participated in 1793/95 in the campaign against France. During this time he fought at Tourcoing, Maubeuge, Cambrai, Landrecies and the siege of Breda. In May 1795 he resigned and entered the Prussian army on 22 September of the same year a. Here he was first hired as a staff captain in the Hussars Battalion No. 11. In January 1798 he was promoted to major and employment followed in the regiment of the Gardes du Corps.

In the campaign 1806/ 07 he fought in Weimar and introduced himself after the retreat of the king in Oliva disposal. In the further course of the campaign, he was unable to attend due to illness and received extended leave for restoration of his health, which he spent in Bad Teplitz. Nevertheless, he was promoted on 16 May 1807 Lieutenant Colonel and as such two years later commander of the 2nd Uhlan Regiment in Breslau.

Health was a result of Solms- Braunfels granted the leave with the character as a major general and an annual pension of 1200 thalers on November 7, 1809.

In recognition of his service he gave Frederick William III. on July 4, 1811 Red Eagle, First Class.

Family

He was also known for his marriage to Princess Frederica of Mecklenburg -Strelitz. She was the widow of Prince Louis of Prussia ( 1773-1796 ). When she became pregnant in 1798, he married her secretly and against the will of the king. The daughter died but soon after her birth.
