Prince Henry of the Netherlands (governor)

Wilhelm Friedrich Heinrich ( born June 13, 1820 Soestdijk; † 13 January 1879 in Walferdingen ), Prince of Orange- Nassau, Prince of the Netherlands, called the navigator, was the third son of King William II of the Netherlands and his wife Anna Pavlovna.

Life

Heinrich joined as an officer in the Navy and was named after his father's death in 1849 by his brother William III. appointed governor of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He ruled there to strictly parliamentary principles. He was also Lieutenant Admiral of the Dutch fleet.

He married on 19 May 1853 the Princess Amalia of Saxe -Weimar- Eisenach ( 1830-1872 ), daughter of Duke Karl Bernhard of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach; The marriage remained childless. On August 24, 1878, he entered into a second marriage with the Princess Marie of Prussia ( 1855-1888 ), the eldest daughter of Prince Frederick Charles. The reason was the impending end of the dynasty of Orange -Nassau, for the king had not married sons. However, the marriage remained childless. But Henry had an illegitimate son, Philip Elmer Ladislas to Istein ( 1877-1904 ).
