Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg

Moritz Franz Friedrich Constantin Alexander Heinrich August Carl Albert of Saxe-Altenburg ( born October 24, 1829 in Eisenberg, † May 13 1907 in Arco ) was a prince of Saxe- Altenburg from the Ernestine branch line of the Wettin and presumptive heir to the throne of the Duchy of Saxony- Altenburg.

Life

Moritz was the younger son of the Duke George of Saxony -Altenburg and his wife Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg ( 1803-1862 ). After his training in Jena and Dresden, he stood first in Bavaria and from 1851 in the Prussian military services. First lieutenant in the Royal Prussian Hussars Regiment, last general of cavalry.

Moritz was president of the History and Antiquities Research Society of Easter country. The natural history museum in Altenburg is named after Moritz Mauritianum. After an extended trip in 1857, he quit the military service and studied at the University of Bonn.

On October 15, 1862, the prince married in Meiningen Auguste ( 1843-1919 ), daughter of Duke Bernhard II Erich friend of Saxe- Meiningen. On the occasion of his marriage he received from King William I of Prussia the newly instituted Grand Cross of the Red Eagle.

In German Prussian War, Prince Moritz committed together with Duchess Agnes active in the German Red Cross, whose honorary chairman of the national association, he was until 1904.

Since Moritz's older brother Ernst I. from his marriage had no male heir, Moritz was considered hereditary prince of the duchy. He died a year before his brother, which is why the claim to the throne passed to his son.

Moritz was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Grand Cross of the Ducal Saxe- Ernestine House Order, the House Order of the diamond crown, the Grand Cross of Guelph Order, the Oldenburg House and Merit, the House Order of the White Falcon and the House Order of Albert the Bear. The Moritzstraße in Altenburg is named after the Prince.
