Prince of Asturias

Prince of Asturias ( Prince of Asturias ) is since 1388 one of the official title of the heir to the throne of Castile. After the union of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon to the Kingdom of Spain at the turn of the 16th century, the title was transferred to the respective Spanish Crown Prince.

Origin and Meaning

The title refers not only to the 1388 by King John I to the material supply of the heir to the throne erected Principality of Asturias, but also includes a proposed historical reminiscence of the former Kingdom of Asturias, who had defied the onset from 711 Arab conquest of the Iberian Peninsula and the christian Visigothic residents had been left as a last retreat base and was therefore regarded as the nucleus of the Reconquista. The ancient kingdom of Asturias and Asturias and Leon had risen in the 13th century in the Kingdom of Castile. By the Castilian ruler therefore awarded her heirs to the throne the title of Prince of Asturias, they summoned the traditional spirit of Christian resistance against the Muslim Al -Andalus, the reconquest was completed only with the taking of Granada in 1492.

The title of Prince of Asturias has survived all political and constitutional upheaval in Spain and is worn after the last interruption by the Second Republic and the Franco dictatorship in 1977 again by the Spanish Crown Prince.

According to the current legislation in accordance with Article 2 of Royal Decree No 1368/1987 of 6 November 1987, the heir is entitled by birth or from the moment in which he is heir to the throne.

Earlier, the award of the title was celebrated with a grand ceremony as a session of the Cortes. The Cortes swore recognize the heir to the throne later as king and heir to the throne ( as he himself to have been able ) vowed to follow the old laws and his father to preserve fidelity. According to the current Constitution of the Príncipe de Asturias swears on coming of age before the assembled members of both houses of the Cortes Generales, to perform his duties faithfully to uphold the Constitution and the laws to protect the rights of citizens and regions as well as loyalty to the King.

Legal status, title, description, translation

The title Prince of Asturias is the heir to the throne by virtue of Article 57 paragraph 2 of the Spanish Constitution of December 27, 1978 by birth or obtaining the first place in line to the throne by right to due.

A female heir to the throne and the wife of a male heir to the throne lead accordance with Article 2 of Royal Decree No 1368 /1987 of 6 November 1987 on the nature of the title, styling and honor of the Royal Family, the title Princesa de Asturias. The husband, a princess wearing under the same conditions also the title of Prince of Asturias. The successor couple deserves the salutation Alteza Real ( Royal Highness ).

The word Príncipe (from Latin princeps, " the first " ), which can be translated both as Prince with Prince in German, is here correctly reproduce with Prince. General Linguistically, however, the name Prince of Asturias has prevailed, as in the German language, the children of a monarch or prince are commonly called princes or princesses called and the title of Prince of Asturias is firmly connected to the position of crown prince, so that his carrier thus always simultaneously also Prince of Spain. King children as such in the Spanish monarchy, however, in any case not as a " prince " ( or príncipe princesa ), but as " Infante " ( Infante or Infanta ) refers. Although so the Spanish throne in today's Autonomous Community " Asturias " ( Principality of Asturias ) does not hold a special constitutional position, the translation of the title is to be regarded with " Prince of Asturias " in view of the traditional territorial reference and the Spanish word usage as a true ( a similar phenomenon is found in the title of Prince of Wales in relation to the British royal family ).

This list shows the princes of the time from 1388 to 1506 are not included. Furthermore, the persons nominated by the Carlist pretender to the throne are not mentioned. Even the people who stood in line to the throne in the first place without an official proclamation heir to the throne took place missing from the following list. They are Maria Teresa and Luisa Fernanda and Alfonso of Bourbon- Sicily. The Roman numbers refer to the numbering of the Royal Academy of Heraldry and Genealogy from 2004.
