Prince of Wales Museum

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya ( Marathi: छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज वस्तुसंग्रहालय [ tʃ ʰ ʌtrʌpati ʃiʋa ː ː ra ː dʒ dʒi mʌha ʋʌstu sʌŋɡrʌha lʌjʌ ː ] ), formerly Prince of Wales Museum, a museum in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay).

The museum was opened on 10 January 1922, is located on MG Road in Mumbai. Near the museum is the Gateway of India. About ten years ago the museum in memory of the Maratha ruler Shivaji (1630-1680) has been renamed. The original name of the museum was chosen to visit the Prince of Wales in 1905 in Mumbai, as the Prince of Wales has set the foundation stone of the Museum on 11 November 1905. Architect of the museum was George Wittet.

The collections

The museum's collection consists of some 50,000 objects from the fields of art, archeology and natural history. In the Forest Science Department, the native trees and shrubs are shown, a small geological department presents rock samples, minerals and fossils from the area.

The " Maritime Heritage Gallery " shows objects that have in the broad sense to do with the Indian shipping industry. In 2008, two new galleries were opened, the " Karl and Meherbai Khandalavala collection", among other things, an extensive collection of works includes Nainsukhs, and a coin collection of Indian coins.
