Prince Vijaya

Vijaya ( 543 BC *, † 504 BC) was the legendary tribal father of the Sinhalese and the first king of Sri Lanka.

He is said to have emigrated in the 6th century BC, with his entourage from the Kingdom of Vanga in northeast India to Sri Lanka.

History

The chronicle Mahavamsa, from which his lifetime from about 543 BC to 504 BC results, is the main source of information about his life and his experiences dar. Vijaya with the demi-goddess ( yakkhinī ) Kuveni has already G. Turnour ( 1837) with the story of Odysseus and Circe compared. The Mahavamsa is no reliable information about Vijaya, who perhaps has never existed as a historical figure. However, archaeological findings support the corresponding dating of the Aryan immigration to Sri Lanka.
