Prince Wilhelm of Baden (1829–1897)

Prince Ludwig Wilhelm August von Baden ( born December 18, 1829 in Karlsruhe, † April 27, 1897 in Karlsruhe ) was a Prince of Baden and Baden - Prussian politician and general of the infantry.

Life

Ludwig Wilhelm August von Baden was the third son of the Grand Duke Leopold of Baden (1790-1852) and Princess Sophie of Sweden (1801-1865), daughter of the deposed King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden, was born. In 1849 he resigned as first lieutenant in the Prussian 1st Guards Regiment to toe, went to 1856 when Major Guard Artillery and was last Major General and Commander of the Guard Artillery Brigade. He retired in 1863 from the Prussian service, and married in St. Petersburg, the Princess Maria of Leuchtenberg. The young couple is domiciled in Karlsruhe, where it moved into a palace near the Royal Palace.

In the German war between Prussia and the German Confederation ( with Austria ) in 1866, he took over the command of the Baden Division in the 8th Federal corps that fought on the side of the German Confederation. Opponents accused him to carry through his cautious leadership to blame for the failure of the campaign. In the German -Prussian War 1870/71 he commanded the 1st Brigade of Baden in Werder 's corps and was severely wounded in Nuits -Saint -Georges.

Kaiser Wilhelm II granted him on 18 December 1895 the 25th anniversary of the Battle of the Order Pour le Mérite Nuits, the highest Prussian bravery award.

As Baden Prince William had a seat and vote in the First Chamber of the States General Baden and was from 1859 to 1860, again from 1863 to 1866 and a third time from 1893 to 1897 president of this chamber.

From 1871 to 1878 Prince Wilhelm of Baden was as deputy to the Reichstag ( Nazi Party ) to. His last military rank was general of the infantry.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge Urania to immortality in Berlin and honorary member of the lodge Carl concord in Mannheim, also an honorary member of the noble to view in Freiburg.

Marriage and issue

William married on 11 February 1863, the Russian Zarenenkelin Princess Maria Maximilianowna of Leuchtenberg (* October 16, 1841, † February 16, 1914 ), Princess Romanovskij, the daughter of Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg ( 1817-1852 ).

From this marriage two children were born:

  • Sophie Marie Luise Amelie Josephine (* July 26, 1865, † November 29, 1939 ) ∞ Duke Frederick II of Anhalt (* August 19, 1856, † April 21, 1918 )
  • Maximilian Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm ( * July 10, 1867; † November 6, 1929 ), the last Chancellor of the Empire
