Princess Agnes of Anhalt-Dessau

Friederike Amalie Agnes of Anhalt- Dessau ( * June 24, 1824 in Dessau, † October 23, 1897 in Hummelshain ), was a princess of Anhalt- Dessau and by marriage Duchess of Saxe- Altenburg.

Life

Agnes was the daughter of Duke Leopold IV of Anhalt- Dessau and his wife Princess Friederike of Prussia ( 1796-1850 ).

On April 28, 1853 married in Dessau Prince Ernst of Saxe -Altenburg, who shortly thereafter was as Ernst I. Herzog. The marriage was, in spite of the absence of an hereditary prince, happy and seriously loved his wife very much. Agnes was as subtle and as a talented painter.

Like all princesses of the time, she devoted herself to the welfare and engaged in charitable. Especially in the troops care and the care of the wounded in the Franco-German War it was particularly in evidence. Agnes is the author of the Book: A Word to Israel (Leipzig, 1893).

The silver wedding of the Duchess in 1878 solemnly celebrated throughout the country and Ernst gave his wife the newly created thumbnail Knight's Cross, First Class of the Saxe- Ernestine House Order, the so-called " princesses cross." To mark the anniversary, the " Ernst- Agnes Foundation " was launched.

In Altenburg Agnes square is named after her. After her death, Ernst was built by the Duchess Agnes Memorial Church, in which the Duchess is also buried.
