Princess Anna of Hesse and by Rhine

Maria Anna Wilhelmine Elisabeth Mathilde of Hesse and by Rhine ( born May 25, 1843 in Darmstadt, † April 16, 1865 in Schwerin ) was a princess of Hesse and by Rhine by marriage and Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg -Schwerin.

Life

Anna was the only daughter of Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine (1809-1877) from his marriage to Elizabeth (1815-1885), daughter of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. She was a sister of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and by Rhine.

Anna married on 12 May 1864 in Darmstadt the Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg -Schwerin. For the Grand Duke, it was the second marriage after his first wife Auguste died in 1862 of tuberculosis. The Grand Duke had met the Princess at his participation in the Frankfurt princes and was reminded by her devout and timid nature to his first wife. Anna was by this marriage stepmother of four surviving children from his first marriage Friedrich Franz II

Anna died a year after the marriage age of 21 from puerperal fever after the birth of her only child. The Grand Duchess is buried in Schwerin Cathedral.
