Princess Margaret of Prussia

Princess Margarethe Beatrice Feodora of Prussia VA ( born April 22, 1872 in Potsdam, New Palace, † January 22, 1954 in Schönberg near Kronberg, Hesse ) was by marriage Countess of Hesse- Kassel.

Origin

Margaret, known to her family " Mossy ", the youngest daughter of Crown Prince Frederick William ( Friedrich III. ) ( 1831-1888 ) was and his wife Princess Royal Victoria ( 1840-1901 ), the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and her Prince Consort of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha. Her grandfather, the first German Emperor and King of Prussia Wilhelm I as father's side was her two sisters Sophie and Victoria she was her mother and was very close to the English way of life very fond of. She died as the last child of Emperor Frederick III.

Marriage and issue

On January 25, 1893, she married Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse, future King of Finland and later head of the branch of Hesse-Kassel in the house of Hesse. From the harmonious and happy marriage six sons were born, including two sets of twins:

  • Friedrich Wilhelm Sigismund of Hesse (1893-1916), like in Romania
  • Maximilian Friedrich Wilhelm Georg of Hesse (1894-1914), killed in Flanders
  • Philip of Hesse (1896-1980) ∞ Princess Mafalda of Savoy
  • Wolfgang of Hesse (1896-1989)
  • Christoph Ernst August of Hesse (1901-1943), like in Italy, ∞ Princess Sophie of Greece
  • Richard Wilhelm Leopold von Hessenl (1901-1969)

1918 Frederick Charles was elected king of the newly independent Finland. Margaret was thus Queen of Finland and legal successor to her cousin, the Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna, who had been wearing the title of Grand Duchess of Finland. Germany's defeat in World War I ended that career as a royal couple but after nine weeks. However, Frederick Charles was head of the House of Hesse- Kassel to the waiver of his brother.
