Princess Maria Pia of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (1849–1882)

Maria Pia della Grazia of Bourbon ( born August 2, 1849 in Gaeta, † September 29, 1882 in Biarritz ) was a Princess of Naples and Sicily.

Life

Maria Pia was the daughter of king Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria.

She married on 5 April 1869 in Rome, the Duke Robert I of Bourbon -Parma, son of Duke Charles III. Parma and Louise Marie Thérèse d' Artois, royal princess of France.

Progeny

Some children were mentally or physically disabled. This was due to the close relationship between Duke Robert and Maria Pia, the cousin and second cousin were. From the marriage twelve children were born:

Duchess Maria Pia died on September 29, 1882 at the age of 33 years in Biarritz, a week after the birth of her last child. Duke Robert married in 1884 his second wife Maria Antonia of Portugal. His most famous child of this second marriage was later Empress Zita of Austria.
