Princess Mary of Great Britain

Princess Mary of Hanover (born 22 Februarjul / March 5 1723greg in London ( Leicester House ). . † January 14, 1772 in Hanau ) was Landgrave of Hesse- Kassel.

Life

She was a daughter of King George II of Great Britain (1683-1760) and his wife, Margravine Caroline of Brandenburg- Ansbach ( 1683-1737 ).

On June 28, 1740 married in Kassel, the Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse- Kassel. With him she had the following children:

  • Wilhelm (1741-1742)
  • Wilhelm I (1743-1821)
  • Karl (1744-1836)
  • Friedrich (1747-1837)

When in 1754 it became known that the Hereditary Prince, Landgrave Friedrich II was converted to the Catholic faith, the marriage was separated, but not divorced, in order to prevent re Marriage of Frederick. Maria was removed with the three sons of the sphere of influence of Frederick, she moved to the Seven Years War in the county of Hanau.

Died in 1736 with Johann Reinhard III. the last male representative of the Hanau Graf house. Because of the agreement as to succession of 1643 the Hanau- Münzenberger part of the country to Hesse -Kassel fell. The father of Countess Maria, Landgrave William VIII of Hesse- Kassel, transferred to punish his son for the conversion, as much as possible of his inheritance directly to grandson, William ( IX / I). This also included the county of Hanau. For the period of its minority Wilhelm VIII Maria ordered as guardian. Countess Maria reigned as for her son, William ( IX / I), as guardian from 1760 to 1764 the county of Hanau.

Her last years she spent in Rumpenheimer castle. She is buried in the crypt of St Mary's Church in Hanau.
