Princess Vilhelmine Marie of Denmark

Wilhelmine Marie of Denmark (Danish: Vilhelmine Marie, born January 18, 1808 in Kiel, † May 30 1891 in Glücksburg ) was a princess of Denmark and Duchess of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg.

Life

Wilhelmine was the youngest daughter of King Frederick VI. born of Denmark and Norway and Marie of Hesse- Kassel in Kiel. At twenty she was married to her cousin, Prince Frederik, later King Frederick VII of Denmark on 1 November 1828 in the Castle Church of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. With this marriage two lines of the Danish royal family were united with each other, a cool relationship had since 1814 to each other. The marriage was welcomed and celebrated by the people with great enthusiasm. This enthusiasm was still at months and was also reflected in poems, stories and festivals resist.

However, the compound was found to have once considered unlucky. In particular, Frederiks dissolute life led to the couple separated in 1834 and three years later, on September 4, 1837 divorced.

A year later, Wilhelmine was with her younger by five years cousin, Duke Charles of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg, married. He was the older brother of the later King Christian IX. of Denmark. In 1848 at Karl as brigade chief on the side of Schleswig-Holstein in the war from 1848 to 1851 ( three-year war ) against Denmark in part, which led to a rupture of relations Wilhelmine to the Danish royal family. In the summer of 1848 Charles came back from military service and the couple lived until 1852 in Dresden. This year it came back to a reconciliation with the family in Denmark. Wilhelmina and her husband stayed away from now on mainly on the locks of Kiel and Louis Lund on, especially after the accession of her brother Christian. In 1864, the Duchy of Glücksburg was Prussian and Karl lost his title of duke. The couple retired to the castle Glücksburg, which left the German Emperor the former Duke house. On October 24, 1878 Charles died at Schloss Glücksburg. Wilhelmine survived him thirteen years, and was buried by his side in the Ducal Mausoleum at the city cemetery.

Both marriages of Wilhelmine remained childless.
