Principality of Montenegro

The Principality of Montenegro (Serbian Књажевина Црна Гора / Crna Gora Knjaževina ) consisted of 13 March 1852 to 28 August 1910. As the capital of Cetinje was chosen. From 1906 to 1918, the Montenegrin Perper was used as currency. The Principality comprised the core of today's Montenegro. De jure it was a constitutional monarchy and a de facto absolutist monarchy. The Principality was formed by Danilo I. on March 13, 1852, when Danilo married and Montenegro was converted to secular principality. After the assassination of Danilo on August 13, 1860, his nephew Nikola was appointed Prince of Montenegro. Nikola finally called on 28 August 1910 made the Kingdom of Montenegro, and was crowned king.

The Battle of Grahovac

Nikolas older brother Mirko Petrović - Njegoš moved on May 1, 1858 against the Ottomans to war and won in the battle of Grahovac a decisive victory. When the Turks retreated, the Montenegrins fell a large amount of military equipment in the hands. This booty was also used in the independence wars of 1862 and 1875-1878.

The victory over the Turks also had a great diplomatic significance for Montenegro. The major European powers were thus forced to settle the boundary between the Ottoman Empire and Montenegro. Montenegro got Grahovo, Rudine, Nikšićs Zupa, more than half of Drobnjaci, Tušina, Uskoci, Lipovo Vasojevići and part of KUCI and Dodoši.
