Prineville is a town in Crook County ( Oregon). Your name refers to the first resident dealer, Barney Prine. The population in 2008 was estimated at 10,370.

History

Prineville was founded in 1877 when Monroe Hodges docked the original plat for the city. The post office was first performed in April 1871 in the name Prine, changed to Prineville in the following year. In October 1880, the city was incorporated. The first high school was opened in 1902.

When the railroad tycoon James J. Hill and Edward H. Harriman Prineville 1911 excluded in their route, they seemed doomed to become a ghost town. In a vote in 1917 decided Prineville citizens with 355 votes to 1, to build their own railway line and collected the money for the connection to the main line is 31 km away.

Thanks to the timber harvest from the nearby Ochoco National Forest, the City of Prineville Railroad developed decades gorgeous. The profits from the railroad were so great that the city 1964-1968 raised no property taxes. With the decline of the timber industry, the Oregon Railway between 2002-04 generated a loss of almost $ 1 million.

Geography

Prineville is located on the Crooked River ( Oregon) at the mouth of Ochoco Creek, 23 km north-west of Prineville reservoirs.

Demography

29.3% of the population were younger than 18 years at the 2000 census; 9.6 % from 18 to 24; 27.0% between 25 and 44; 18.6% between 45 and 64, and 15.5% beyond the age of 65. The median was 33 years.

The median household income was $ 30,435, per capita income was $ 14,163.

Economy

The tire dealer chain Les Schwab Tire Centers in 1952 to connect to Prineville since its inception. In December 2006 the company announced plans to relocate its headquarters to the nearby Bend.

2010 Facebook chose Prineville as a location for a new data center.
