Printer Job Language

Printer Job Language ( PJL ) is a method of Hewlett -Packard to exchange status messages between the printer and computer.

Background

PJL adds job level controls, such as printer language switching, job distribution and subdivision, status messages and file system commands. While PJL was intended as an extension to the Printer Command Language, as it has been developed, it is now supported by most PostScript printers. Many printer manufacturers have extended PJL to adjust commands to their products. Not all HP created and commands documented here are compatible with all printers. PJL is one level above the other page description languages. The syntax used mainly English words.

Example

The command for a PJL status exchange:

  • EC % - 12345X @ PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = PCLXL ( Moves to PCLXL page description language )
  • EC % - 12345X @ PJL SET DUPLEX = ON @ PJL SET BINDING = LONG EDGE or SHORT EDGE (duplex printing)
