The ships of the German Prinz Adalbert class were after the two individual ships SMS SMS Fürst Bismarck and Prince Henry the first class of large cruisers that have been built to a modern design. The class consisted of SMS Prinz Adalbert and SMS Friedrich Carl. The Prinz Adalbert was a replacement for the SMS König Wilhelm, while Friedrich Carl was a Vermehrungsbau.

Design

The two ships of the class were in principle the previously -built SMS Prinz Heinrich very similar, but had three chimneys, and the two 24 -inch guns of Prince Henry were replaced by four 21 -inch guns in two twin towers, a significantly higher rate of fire had as the old 24 -inch guns. As with many ships of that time, the six lower Kasemattgeschütze the secondary artillery were useful only in calm seas.
