Privacy-enhanced Electronic Mail

Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM ) is a concept that defines various security services (confidentiality, data origin authentic, proof of origin ) for emails.

PEM was designed around 1990 and has been classified by the Internet Engineering Task Force just as historic. The certification bodies are organized hierarchically. Users of PEM must sign each message. It is not possible for them to send anonymous messages.

In PEM each has the opportunity to check the signature, even if the message itself can not be read.

PEM is limited to American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A synthesis of PEM and Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions MIME Object Security Services were the (MOSS ).
