Private collection

A Private Collection is an established not from public funds, but with private funds collection of cultural goods. Frequently, the term refers to works of art and it is the counterpart to the collection of a state art museum.   • In Austria, the Essl Collection in Vienna comprises approximately 6,000 works of contemporary art. The Liechtenstein Museum, also in Vienna, is considered one of the greatest private art collections in the world. In Carinthia, there is the Museum Liaunig and in Thalheim bei Wels in Upper Austria, the museum Angerlehner was opened with around 2,500 works in September 2013.
  • In Switzerland, the Fondation Beyeler is one of the most important collections of classic modern art in Europe.
