Priverno

Priverno is a city in the province of Latina in the Italian region Latium, located about 13 928 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 90 km southeast of Rome and 29 km east of Frosinone.

Geography

Priverno is located on the ridge of Mount Saiano, a spur of the Monti Lepini above the Pontine plain. It is the seat of the Comunità Montana Monti Lepini e Ausoni.

The neighboring municipalities are clockwise Roccagorga, Maenza and Prossedi in the north, Roccasecca and Sonnino in the east, the south and Pontinia Sezze in the West.

With the station Priverno - Fossanova the municipality lies on the railway line Rome - Formia - Naples.

History

The ancient Privernum was one of the main locations of the Volscians. It was BC conquered by the Romans in 329 by Lucius Aemilius Mamercinus Privernas and declared the Civitas Sine Suffragio. By following the Via Appia, the heyday of the city began. Even after the end of the Western Roman Empire and the decline of the Via Appia was Privernum still an important trading center. It was only in the 9th century, it was probably destroyed by the Saracens. The population then moved to the easier to defend Collerosso, the site of today's Old Town, on. The settlement was named Piperno. From the Middle Ages, the city was part of the Papal States. They never came under the rule of a Roman noble families but retained its autonomy as a town.

From the eighth century to 1217, the city was a bishopric until the diocese was united with that of Terracina. Today it is called the diocese of Latina - Terracina - Sezze - Priverno.

Piperno 1927 was renamed back to Priverno.

Policy

The mayor and council

Umberto Macci (right Citizens' List ) was elected in May 2003 to the Mayor and confirmed in April 2008 in the Official. His list also with 13 of 20 seats, the majority in the City Council.

Priverno has since March 2008, a partnership with the German community Wallenhorst in Germany. More partnerships with Bruck an der Leitha in Lower Austria, with Bridgwater in the British county of Somerset, with the French community Tullins in the department of Isère, with Raca in Slovakia, with the Slovenian municipalities Brda and Kanal ob Soci, and with the communities Břeclav, Nový boron and Uherske Hradiste in the Czech Republic.

Attractions

The medieval old town is well preserved in a panoramic position overlooking the valley of Amaseno.

  • At the central Piazza Giovanni XXIII. stands the Palazzo Comunale, the Town Hall from the 13th century.
  • Next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata rises at the end of a large staircase. He was in 1183 by Pope Lucius III. consecrated and considerably remodeled in the 18th century.
  • The Church of Sant'Antonio Abate near the old town has a beautiful Romanesque portal
  • The Romanesque church of San Benedetto, on the eastern edge of the old town, was once the Cathedral of Priverno. It is equipped with numerous frescoes dating back to the 9th century.
  • Nationally best-known monument is the Abbey Fossanova from the 9th century, which is below the old town in the valley of Amaseno.
  • Two kilometers north of the center lies the archaeological site of ancient Privernum. Visits available by appointment only.

Museums

  • In the old Episcopal Palace, the Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico ) is housed, showing mainly finds from Privernum.
  • The Medieval Museum (Museo Medicare ovals) is furnished in outbuildings of the abbey Fossanova.
  • The Museum of Mathematics ( Museo per la Matematica ) located in the Castello di San Martino.

Specialty

Priverno is famous for its artichokes, which are sold fresh or pickled in oil.
