Common Privet ( Ligustrum vulgare)

The privet ( Ligustrum ), or rarely called Rain pastures, are a genus of flowering plants in the family Oleaceae ( Oleaceae ).

Description

Ligustrum species grow as deciduous or evergreen shrubs or trees. The oppositely arranged leaves are constantly short-stalked, simple and entire.

The flowers are borne in terminal or axillary, often paniculate inflorescences. The hermaphrodite, fourfold flowers often fragrant. The four sepals are fused bell-shaped. The four petals are mostly white Roehrig grown up in a funnel shape. The two stamens do not protrude from the corolla tube. Two carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. There shall be one to dreisamige berries or drupes.

Occurrence

The Ligustrum species have areas in the Old World. Most species have their home in eastern Asia, a few in Europe, Africa and Australasia. In Europe, only the Common Privet ( Ligustrum vulgare ) is native.

A few species are cultivated as ornamental trees and especially used in gardens for planting hedges. Most of these species are originally from Japan or China. Privet is often planted as a cutting hedge.
