Prizzi

Prizzi is a city in the province of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, with 4993 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Prizzi lies 90 km south of Palermo. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and in the production of dairy products and fertilizers.

The neighboring municipalities are Campo Felice di Fitalia, Castronovo di Sicilia, Corleone, Lercara Friddi, Palazzo Adriano and Vicari.

History

Prizzi is one of the oldest settlements in Sicily. They found remains of a settlement dating from the 8th and 6th centuries BC In the 4th century BC, there were Carthaginians, Greeks and Romans.

The origin of the present town dates back to the foundation at the time of the Normans. 1150 was the church into the hands of a Cistercian monastery. According to various feudal lords Prizzi came into the possession of the Bonanno family until 1812.

Festivals

The Holy Week is celebrated in a special way. In addition to the usual processions, a traditional dance is performed, the Ballo dei Diavoli ( The Evil Dead ). As devil and death masked dancers move through the place and ultimately in the everlasting battle between good and evil of Jesus and the Virgin Mary defeated symbolic.
