Problem domain

Among a problem domain (also application domain ) is understood in systems engineering and software engineering, particularly in a definable problem area or a certain application area for computer systems or software. Problem domains typically provide very specific requirements of a technical system which is to be used for simulation or even address the domain-specific tasks and problems. These requirements are incorporated in particular in the context of requirements analysis that precedes a system development, and during the design of the system in the development process and significantly determine the modeling or modeling, which is the later realization basis.

The term is often used when there are for the field in question a large number of similar systems, all of which must implement the requirements of the domain. Problem domains are therefore well suited for the reuse of architectures and components of a system.
