Process (anatomy)

An apophysis (secondary epiphysis ) is a bony process, which usually serves as an approach to tendons or ligaments. The apophysis has its own Ossifikationzentrum (bone core ) that blends in general with the main core of the epiphysis, but occasionally remains independent.

In arthropods, an apophysis denotes a projection on the outer Chitinskelett.

Apophysiolysis

Since apophyses are connected during growth or by cartilage tissue with the other bones, these projections can under excess strain tear ( Apophysiolysis ). The most frequently happens when grown on very strong body mass gain animals (large breeds of dogs, pigs). Most commonly, the elbow bump (tuber olecranon ) of the ulna, the great Umdreher ( greater trochanter ) of the femur and the tibia bump ( tibial tuberosity ) of the tibia ( Osgood-Schlatter disease, tibial tubercle - tubercle - avulsion of the dog ) are affected.
